Family Tree Detailed "How to" Guide

Edit

Family Tree explained

Your family legacy can be built out easily and quickly in the Family Tree and Friends network. It’s easy to use, allows you to add friends and extended family, but still filter to see just your bloodline - and you can adjust it if you aren’t happy with the way it represents your lineage.

If you are unsure of the terminology used to explain the family tree you can find information on terms used at the bottom of each wiki guide.

Family tree - adding, removing or moving ancestors or family members

You can easily add a new family member to your tree by clicking the edit control within the family tree node. Select edit relationship, and selecting the relationship type you want to add. Uniquely to arcalife you can add multiple family tree nodes to help you build faster. Each node has the same set of controls so that means you can start building anywhere and work from the top to bottom or bottom to top of the family tree. When you are creating a current family member at this point you are able to send them an email invite to join arcalife.

To remove a node that you have added select and click the menu option in the same menu list and both the family tree node and the relationship are removed from the tree. If you check the life archives you will see that the profile for the person that you deleted has been retained. This is to allow you to remove a node from the family tree but still retain that information in the life archive. If you wish to remove this you should do this in the life archive - permanently removing profile is not possible from the family tree itself.

You can move a tree node by hovering your mouse pointer over the green part of the node. Left clicking and then holding the mouse button until a hand shape appears. You can then drop the family tree node to it's new location.

Edit

Family tree - other basic controls

The family tree navigator is a rectangular box that shows an overview of the tree. By left clicking and holding the left mouse button, you can drag and drop the grey preview box to any point in the tree, and the main view will snap to the new location. If your desired location is outside of the current navigator box, move the preview box to the edge of the pane and the navigator box will scroll automatically to the new location.

The zoom and pan box, contains a plus/minus zoom control. Select plus to scroll in on a place that you are looking at. Using the minus button, will reduce the detail seen in the tree but may give you additional perspective to find an area that you are looking for.

The pan control, has multidirectional arrows that scroll the viewing window left, right,up or down.

In the top right of the family tree page a full screen button can be found. This removes the left hand site menu and give you more space for the canvas.

Printing is quick and easy. Select print tree and the level of zoom required. The number of pages will be calculated based on zoom and size of your tree.

Inviting a family member to the family tree is quick and easy. Select the edit menu from the tree node then select invite family member. when you do this you are sending an invite to the member of the family who's node you are clicked on. If you have sent an invite already, the system will remind you of this at the time of sending.

Seeing the tree invites you have sent other family and friend trees you have access to is simple. Just select the tabe that corresponds to each area.

Family Tree - More advanced controls

uploading a gedcom to your family tree. Gedcom files of up to 10,000 nodes can now be added to your family tree. Simply click the import gedcom button on the main tree canvas and browse to the location on your hard drive of the gedcom file. Click upload and the upload will begin. a matching process will occur and your tree and any associated events, like marriages, births and deaths will be sent to the correct category with the site. Citations and sources are added to the relavant tree node notes and comments that can be found within the profile window. Due to the compex logic involved if your upload does not look exactly right, uniquely to arcalife you can drag and drop the family tree node an alternate location. You do this by putting you mouse pointer over the family tree node -in the green section, left clicking, holding the left mouse button until an open hand appears. Then drag the node to the new location.

Edit

viewing the life archive of an ancestor or family member

Select the edit link in any of the family tree nodes and choose view life archive. If you have access to this archive you can see the memories, events and experience of an ancestor as well as their timeline. If you created the ancestor profile then you will be able to see the content. If this is the profile of a living member of the site, the permissions that they have sent will determine what you are able to see.
